IIT Madras does not award class, division, or rank. It does publish a notional conversion for admissions and career certificates. The Senate changed that conversion on 11 November 2020. The same CGPA of 8.00 is 75% on the old rule and 80% on the new rule.

For the conversion of CGPA into percentage, the Senate has approved the following conversion formula: i) Students graduated till 10.11.2020 PERCENTAGE = 55 + {10 (CGPA - 6)} ii) Students graduated from 11.11.2020 PERCENTAGE = CGPA multiplied by the factor of 10 (CGPA x 10).

Confirmed by Dean (Academic Courses) letter F.No.Acad/PGU/2021 dated 30 August 2021. The institute still issues only cumulative grade cards. Use the printed CGPA on the grade card as the input; do not invent a class or rank.

The Institute follows Credit system and hence no class or Division or rank is awarded to students. The formula applicable for conversion of CGPA to percentage (notional) is CGPA multiplied by the factor of 10 (CGPA x 10) with effect from 11.11.2020.
What this page will not do
The 30 August 2021 Dean (Academic Courses) letter, F.No.Acad/PGU/2021, confirms CGPA × 10 with effect from 11.11.2020. The Academic Section “CGPA Calculation & Conversion” PDF still prints the older 55 + 10(CGPA − 6) rule for students who graduated till 10.11.2020.
This page will not invent a class or All-India rank, and it will not apply IIT Madras rules to any other IIT.
